A. Herboldsheimer - Civil War- Company K (Topeka Battery), Shawnee County, Kansas

History of Shawnee County, Kansas, and Representative Citizens
Civil War
Second Kansas Regiment of militia-
"Company K (Topeka Battery)Ross Burns*, captain; Tobias Billings and Charles H. Wyckoff,* lieutenants; Charles H. Gibson, ist sergeant; James Anderson*, John Armstrong*. John S. Branner*, Justus Brockway, Nicholas Brown*, Charles H. Budd*, Daniel Copson, J. F. Cummings, Dan- iel Dawson, John Devine, William Farren, R. Fitzgerald. J. E. Follansbee*, Guilford G. Gage*, C. K. Gilchrist, George Ginnold*, Daniel Handley*, Nathan Harvey, A. Herboldsheimer. J. H. Holman*. Ben Hughes*, A. "

In the list of men in the Topeka Battery only those designated by stars* were with Captain Burns in the same battle, the others remaining in Topeka to guard the city.

Note- A. Herboldsheimer without *. It appears that A. Herboldsheimer was one of those remaining in Topeka to guard the city.

"In October 1864, Topekans erected a stockade of cottonwood logs for protection against Price's raid. The flimsy roofless structure was derisively called "Fort Folly" by citizens who pointed out that it would be scant protection against artillery. The Second Regiment of the Kansas State Militia, however, engaged in a bloody skirmish with Price's forces at the Big Blue River near Kansas City, Missouri. The regiment, composed of men from Topeka and Shawnee County under the command of Col. George Veale, met a vastly superior enemy force on October 22. Although forced to retreat, the regiment inflicted severe losses and helped to check Price's advance. The Topeka battery, attached to the regiment as Company K, took up a position in a lane near the crossing of the river where they repulsed two spirited cavalry charges but succumbed to a third. Eight men were killed, four wounded, and ten, including Captain Ross Burns, were taken prisoner. Burns stood by his piece until he was clubbed into insensibility and dragged from the field."

The outer housing is mounted on the inner socket body to undergo movement relative thereto between first and second axially displaced positions.

!BIOGRAPHY: from Jan Gardner's notes:
Sarah Alice Segraves, the 7th child of John M. Segraves and Agnes Mahood was born December 18, 1861 in Lancaster, Grant County, Wisconsin. When Sarah lived in Cassville, Wisconsin as a young lady with her parents, she would ride the ferry across the Mississippi River to Milleville, Iowa to work in a canning plant. She met her future husband , Daniel Herboldsheimer in Millville. Daniel was born November 2, 1857 in Cookstown, Pennsylvania, (now Fayette City), the second son of Johann Barthalamaeus and Barbara Pflegardt Herboldsheimer. Barthalamaeus and Barbara came to Pennsylvania from near Nurnberg, Germany about 1850. In 1868 he moved to Millville Township, Clayton County, Iowa with his family. In 1878 Daniel went to Kansas then to Kenesaw, Adams County, Nebraska where he homesteaded. Sarah and her mother Agnes and a younger brother had moved to Hastings, Nebraska in the late 1870's. On January 1, 1880 Daniel and Sarah were married in Hastings, Adams County, Nebraska. They lived on the homestead near Kenesaw until April of 1886 when they sold the place and moved to a farm northeast of Potter, Cheyenne County, Nebraska. In 1889 the family moved to Gandy, Nebraska, about 30 miles north of North Platte, Nebraska, to find work. They returned to the farm at Potter in 1893. Daniel built a barn, corrals, house and other buildings from native limestone that he quarried and hauled about five miles. The farmstead is now a "Nebraska State Historical Site." Sarah died on April 12, 1911 at home. Daniel died on November 27, 1945.

Peter Herboldsheimer 1859 Portage Brewery, Kalamazoo, MI

Peter Herboldsheimer 1859 Portage Brewery, Kalamazoo, MI

Nicholas Baumann

Another small brewery that sprang into operation during the 1850s was the Portage Brewery, built by Nicholas Baumann along the west side of Winsted Street (since absorbed by a parking lot) at what was then known as the “lower end of Portage Street” near the intersection of Portage and Lovell. Baumann, who would later join George Foegele’s Kalamazoo Spring Brewery, arrived in Kalamazoo in 1855 from New York’s Allegheny Mountains, and began working in a boarding house. A year later, he built the Portage Brewery and managed it for four years until the early spring of 1859, when an argument with one Peter Herboldsheimer resulted in Baumann being severely scalded with a bucketful of hot beer. Herboldsheimer was sentenced to 40 days in jail for the incident, while Baumann turned his operation over to Sesemann & Co. as he recovered from his injuries.

Herboldsheimer Oilfield References

Herboldsheimer Oilfield References

Herboldsheimer Oil Field (Western Nebraska):
Coral Production Corporation, Denver, CO
Project: A quick method to evaluate waterflood success - Coral Production plans to install a waterflood in the Herboldsheimer field, in the western Nebraska section of the Denver-Julesberg Basin. The success rate of waterfloods in the area is mixed, with Basin operators typically failing. Various causes for the failures include the presence of depositional channels and high free-gas saturation at the end of primary production, preventing formation of an oil bank; wettability problems -- the tendency of a fluid to adhere to the pore walls of reservoir rock; and fractures adversely affecting the flow of oil.

Because the D-J Basin comprises mostly small independent operators who lack in-house laboratory facilities and access to special core and fluid analyses, Coral Production will use the new computational intelligence technology to model field information available in the public domain (Nebraska Oil and Gas Conservation Commission). The calibrated simulation model can then be used to predict future performance with a high degree of confidence. A significant use would be calculating the ratio of secondary production to primary production (S/P). An S/P ratio of less than 0.5 is considered an economic failure, so a means of rapidly and inexpensively estimating secondary recovery reserves as a function of primary recovery would provide a gauge of potential success for a waterflood.

Coral Production will use this technology to evaluate the probability of a successful waterflood at the Herboldsheimer field. Operational and oil data from 164 D-J Basin sand units will be analyzed using "fuzzy logic" and neural network techniques to develop correlations of secondary production to primary production performance ratios and the field and oil information. A ranking technique will rate individual parameters such as field location, producing horizon, production and other field and reservoir characteristics. The high-ranking parameters will then be correlated with the secondary production to primary production (S/P) of a portion of the waterfloods in the database. S/P predictions will be made for the remaining waterfloods, and neural network correlations based on the entire data set used to predict the secondary reserves from waterflooding the Herboldsheimer field.

The prediction of the S/P ratio will provide a quick means of evaluating the probable success of waterflooding not only in the Herboldsheimer field but, if successful, can be used to evaluate the many D-J Basin wells that are depleted and temporarily abandoned. Computational intelligence screening of technical merits and estimating secondary reserves would prevent the premature plugging of these potentially valuable assets.

Coral Production's cost share for the 24-month project will be $125,000, and DOE will provide federal funding of $75,000. The project contact is James R. Weber, 303-623-3573.Reference- http://www.fe.doe.gov/techline/techlines/1999/tl_indoil3.html
